Meta logo and the history of the business

Let’s get an insight into the Meta logo and some history behind the social technology.

“Connection is evolving, and so are we.”

This is the bold statement on Facebook’s website. It summarizes the company’s aim to integrate the physical and digital world using virtual and augmented realities. The Meta owners believe the Metaverse is the next evolution in social technology.

Also, they think their range of products has outgrown their Facebook brand, hence the call for rebranding. So, on October 28, 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name as Meta. These four-letter words nudge closer to the Metaverse—the future of social interactions.

Meta signifies beyond. And the company’s stakeholders believe it reminds them there’s always more to build. So, as expected, the tech giant ushered in a new logo as part of its rebranding. The logo comprises a continuous loop symbol and a readable black wordmark.

The Meta logo works between 2D and 3D, evoking different charismas. For instance, it looks like the letter—M or the figure—8. Also, it projects itself as an infinity trademark, symbolizing the endless horizons in the Metaverse. In short, the Meta logo animatedly lives in motion.

The designer created the Meta ogo to take on infinite textures, colors, and movements. Yet, the logo dresses in the blue shade to reflect the company’s image and its core products. As a result, the logo is clean, catchy, readable, memorable, and scalable even on the smallest apps.

Meta Logo Evolution And History

2021 – Present

To outdoor its new trademark, a sleek animation of the Facebook logo swallows all the brand’s applications to form the Meta logo. The Meta logo comprised a looping symbol with a wordmark beside it. The light blue logo is an infinity symbol with a dynamic charisma.

From one angle, it resembles the letter—M, referencing the brand’s new name, Meta. Then, from another standpoint, it shows figure—8, signifying the octave creation values. Overall, the Meta logo reminds us of the ouroboros signage—a snake biting its tail.

But, significantly, it symbolizes no beginning or ending, the vision of Mark Zuckerberg.

Why Does Meta Logo work?

1.      The Meta Logo Is Simple:

The Meta logo features no distorting graphic elements. Instead, it paints its charisma by using an infinity icon and a wordmark. So it’s highly recognizable and easy to remember. But, of course, you can achieve the same level of recognition by avoiding detailed design elements.

2.      The Meta Logo Is Memorable:

The Meta logo, though unveiled a few weeks ago, has already achieved a remarkable status. It has ridden on the popularity of its predecessor, Facebook. But, again, it has permeated the minds of millions because of its founder’s reputation. Also, its simplicity has helped its memorability.

3.      The Meta Logo Is Scalable:

Meta Platforms, Inc. is among the leading tech giants investing in the Metaverse. So, to announce its presence and mission to the world, the stakeholders are promoting the Meta logo everywhere. It can appear on these channels because of its minimalist layout.

4.      The Metal Logo Is Readable:

The owners of Meta are seasoned entrepreneurs, so they know what works. That’s why they pick a simple sans-serif font to convey the brand’s personality. With this in place, the wordmark is legible, allowing users to read its name and also build a connection with it.

5.      The Metal Logo Is Catchy:

The marketing environment is crowded. There are lots of brands competing for the same audience. So, to stand above your rivals, your logo should be attractive. Thankfully, the Meta logo is eye-catching. It’s hard to turn a blind eye to its looping persona. Therefore, it grabs attention quickly and effortlessly.

Meta Logo Design Elements

Though they are core to every artwork, a wrong design element would hurt your project. And that’s why you should choose carefully. Considering the Meta logo, the designer used fewer graphic elements. So, without wasting time, let’s connect with these design elements.

Meta Logo Shape And Symbols

A Loop Signage:

The Meta looping trademark resembles the ouroboros emblem. This ancient Egyptian symbol depicts a snake or dragon swallowing its tail. And it represents infinity or wholeness. Likewise, the Meta trademark is an infinite graphic element. It symbolizes endless possibilities.

Meta Logo Colors

1.      A Blue Color:

Blue was the official color of Facebook before its transition. And with the new name, Mark Zuckerberg has proven his unconditional love for the color. Blue, the color of the sky, represents imagination, freedom, and inspiration. Also, it signifies stability, loyalty, and confidence. Importantly, these are powerful emotions aligning with the company’s values.

2.      A Black Color:

The universal symbol walks alongside a black wordmark. Together, they carry the brand’s mission into the virtual realm. Again, black symbolizes power, authority, and elegance. But, also, the color of darkness evokes powerful emotions such as aggression, fear, and rebellion.

What Font Is the Meta Logo?

The Meta wordmark is clean, bold, and executed in title case letterings. It’s a sans-serif typeface that resembles the Carmen Sans Semi Bold and the Nexa Text Bold. Erik Spiekermann, a typographer, claimed Facebook had adopted the font he designed in the mid-1980s for the West Germany Post Office. He called this typeface FF Meta Bold.

What Is the Meta Symbol?

The Meta symbol is a continuous looping shape that resembles a ribbon with two-coiled ends. This Moebius ribbon, because of its dynamism, appears as the figure—eight or the letter—M. The iconic Meta symbol signifies boundless opportunities and the desire to always build more.

Why Is Facebook Called Meta?

Zuckerberg and his team could have chosen a different name. Why Meta? That’s a good question! Mark Zuckerberg believes Facebook can’t carry the weight of the new empire. This is because the brand’s range of products has transcended social engagements. Therefore, he needed a moniker that would resonate with the virtual reality world, the Metaverse.

Metaverse is an upcoming virtual space powered by virtual and augmented reality elements. Interestingly, some tech giants are investing massively in this new world. So, it’s a smart move for Zuckerberg to rebrand itself to represent the future of the intended technology.

And to him, Meta is the closest, simplest, and catchy name for his rebranding. But, first, you need to understand that Metaverse is a blend of two names—Meta and Universe. More so, Meta, the new name for Facebook, originated from a Greek word μετά, translated as beyond or after.

Why Did Facebook Change Its Logo?

In most cases, a new name comes with a fresh brand identity. However, to understand the reason for changing the logo, kindly hear from the founder, Mark Zuckerberg:

“Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything that we’re doing today, let alone in the future. So over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and identity on what we’re building toward.”

I hope he has satisfied your curiosity of knowing why he has opted for a new brand image.

What Is Facebook Metaverse?

To be a forerunner in the new digital world, Facebook has grown into Meta. Metaverse is a digital environment that uses augmented reality, virtual reality, 3D holographic avatars, videos, etc., to help people interact in the virtual reality environment.

In this new world, you can collaborate, learn, socialize, shop, and play by using an avatar to represent yourself. According to the Meta founder, Mark Zuckerberg, the Metaverse will be a 3D space that would enhance users’ experience in several ways.

For instance, he talked about social connections, entertainment, gaming, exercise, education, commerce, and much more. But, of course, to experience this realm, you’ll need virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphone apps, or other devices.

Interestingly, Neal Stephenson, an author, coined the term—Metaverse in his fictional novel, Snow Crash. He unveiled the science novel in 1992, envisioning avatars meeting in virtual environments. This book has inspired many innovations towards the virtual world.

In What Year Was Facebook Founded?

Mark Zuckerberg, then a sophomore at Harvard University, unveiled Facebook on February 4, 2004. It began as FaceMash on October 28, 2003, a channel for students to vote for two randomly selected females. Here, the voting focuses on who was more gorgeous. Though it was short-lived, its acceptance among students motivated Zuckerberg to create a social network to connect more people. So, finally, he changed the name to Facebook.

Brief History About Meta Platforms, Inc.

Meta is a global tech firm in Menlo Park, California. It’s one of the world’s largest and most valuable tech companies. On October 28, 2021, Meta replaced Facebook, becoming the parent organization of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and others.

The change aimed to convey the brand’s mission of building the Metaverse. In simple terms, the Metaverse is a virtual reality that mimics the physical world. And the word—Meta originated from the Greek language, and it signifies beyond.

Meta’s predecessor is Facebook: Four students from Harvard University founded this online social network. They included Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. Initially, the idea was to connect students within the school.

So Zuckerberg wrote the code for the novel campus site, FaceMash. During this period, he and his partners allowed students to rate the pictures of two selected females. Though it proved popular among students, sadly, it violated the school’s privacy policy.

Therefore, Harvard authorities shut the sites down. With this experience and inspiration from the Harvard Crimson editorial, Zuckerberg started another project. In January 2004, he started writing the code for his new platform, which took about a month to finish.

Then, on February 4, 2004, he unveiled the network under the name—the facebook. Here, students have the choice of sharing their photos and other personal information. Surprisingly, about 1,200 students registered within 24 hours.

And within a month, almost half of the school’s undergraduates had a profile. The success of the network spread to other Ivy League schools. So, in March 2004, the site added Stanford, Columbia, and Yale. Later, it spread to all universities in America and beyond.

In June 2005, Facebook moved its operations to Palo Alto, California. To simplify its brand’s name, the owners dropped the article from it. Also, they bought a domain name for $200,000. By six months later, Facebook had about six million active users.

After four years of its launch, Facebook became the most-visited social media platform, surpassing Myspace. Again, in its eighth year, Facebook offers its share to the public. And by May 2012, it had raised $16 billion, breaking Google’s record of $1.9 billion IPO in 2004.

On April 12, 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for about $1 billion. Then, two years later, it added WhatsApp, paying almost $19 billion in stock and cash. Then, within a week, Facebook bought Oculus VR, a virtual reality company, for about $2 billion.

Today, the company’s vision has changed, inspiring a new route for the tech giant. That’s why on October 28, 2021, Mark Zuckerberg announced the rebranding of Facebook to Meta. So now you can say Facebook is for the past while Meta is for today and beyond.

My Final Thoughts On the Meta Logo And Its History

The Metaverse isn’t new. It has been on the radar for several years. In 1992, the term appeared in a science fiction novel—Snow Crash. So, readers credit author Neal Stephenson for coining the name. Since then, some tech companies have tried to bring the fantasy world into reality.

The Metaverse is a virtual realm powered by virtual and augmented reality technologies which imitate the real world. In this digital environment, one can do almost anything. A few of these include shopping, socializing, learning, playing, and working.

CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, believes the Metaverse is the future of the internet. This and a few other reasons led him to rebrand his Facebook Empire, Meta. Therefore, October 28, 2021, will be remembered as the day the Meta Platforms Inc. came into existence.

However, Meta is not the sole company in this quest. Tech companies such as Microsoft, Roblox, and Nvidia are investing massively in this technology. Though few gadgets give people a Metaverse experience, the technology is still at its infant stage.

But when it’s fully developed, it will bring the internet to a different level. And with a fully completed Metaverse, we shall interact with our loved ones, friends, business associates, customers, etc., regardless of our geographical residence.

Here, we shall see them as though they are right in front of us. Wow, isn’t this astonishing!
