How to Be a Cost-Conscious Photographer

When photography comes to mind, what do you think of in terms of money? We are nearly certain that you don’t find it one of the cheapest hobbies out there. The cost of the camera itself can burn a whole in your pocket. In addition, lenses can cost just as much as point-and-shoots themselves. However, with these tips, photography can be less expensive.

Stay on Your Level

One instance that I find with a lot of people, even outside the realm of purchasing gadgets, is that they purchase something that they can’t handle. For example, a first time photographer shouldn’t purchase a DSLR when they barely had quality time with a good point-and-shoot. With photography, it is best to do your research and test out each camera. While it will be great to have a DSLR to show off, you won’t be able to take full advantage of it if you don’t know what to do.

Friends to The Rescue

Unless you live in Amish country of Pennsylvania, there is a good bet that you have a close friend or family that will let you use (or even have) one of their cameras as a gift. This would be a great way to save on getting a camera. In addition, the friend or family will be the perfect person to give you a tour around the camera. Best of all, you might even get a package deal out of it if they have accessories.

Fantastic Illustrations by Miguel Mansur

Miguel Mansur is a freelance illustrator operating out of Philadelphia PA.  I came across his behance portfolio a few weeks ago and realized that I see his work floating around tumblr, ffffound, and a few other places pretty regularly; but I’ve never seen a full feature!  So of course I’m taking care of that ;)

I really like his work and I’m glad someone with a style as unique as his is making it commercially.  Let me know what you think in the comments below!

The State Mottos Project by Dan Cassaro

Do you know your state motto? Well, if you don’t, then here is an awesome way to remember them. Dan Cassaro launched the State Mottos Project entitled “50 and 50” in early 2011. This artistic tribute celebrates the individuality of every state — all the more reason for people to feel state pride!

The 50 and 50 project invited 50 artists from all 50 states, and allowed them to create graphical representations of their respective states’ mottos. As Cassaro puts it, the complete collection is much like a “designer’s atlas.” The project lets the public look back in history to appreciate the country’s heritage, and at the same time promotes modern design and digital art.

All 50 mottos were designed following a red, white, and blue palette — soft on the eyes with an antique feel from signage and product labels of yesteryear. Talk about being nostalgic and nationalistic! While some of the state mottos were fashioned with “old-school” style, some were contemporary and minimalistic.

Here are some of my personal favorites:

Big Sur California

A few days ago we decided to spend the weekend in San Fransisco to take a tour of Alcatraz and do some site seeing. On the way back to Dana Point, CA we decided to take highway 1 along the coast.

We had no idea how beautiful it would be until we hit “Big Sur”. It’s absolutely breathtaking. Photos and words can’t describe it but I wanted to share what we experienced. If you ever get the chance you have to visit Big Sur CA.

Below are some photos and a short video of the scenery. The restaurant we ate lunch at was called “Rocky Point” overlooking the mountains and the ocean.
